ABSTRACT Gravitational acceleration fields can be deduced from the collisionless Boltzmann equation, once distribution function is known. This constructed via method of normalizing flows data sets positions and velocities stars. Here, we consider application this technique to solar neighbourhood. We construct mock a linear superposition multiple ‘quasi-isothermal’ functions, representing stellar populations in equilibrium Milky Way disc. show that given set comprising million stars within 1 kpc Sun, underlying field measured with excellent, sub-per cent level accuracy, even face realistic errors missing line-of-sight velocities. The effects disequilibrium lead bias inferred field. diagnosed by presence phase space spiral, which extracted simply cleanly learned function. carry out comparison two other popular methods finding local (Jeans analysis 1D fitting). our most accurately measures accelerations set, particularly disequilibria.
